I need a place to relax and unwind and the family room, which is always filled with kids and their toys, is definitely not it. How can I make my bedroom a special place that helps me to let go of tension and forget about the rest of the world, if only for a little while?

Your bedroom is a perfect place to create a soothing sanctuary which keeps the outside world at bay. Because color influences our emotions and feeling about a space so much, choose a color scheme that promotes a feeling of tranquility and peacefulness. Soft shades of blue and green, which are part of the spa colors featured in a number of Waverly fabric and wallpaper collections, will certainly help to establish that atmosphere of serenity and relaxation you're after.

Blue is especially calming and soothing and a favorite choice of many but before making a final decision, take a look at the many shades of green. The most restful color to the eye, green is a great neutral that symbolizes peace and renewal. Pattern, too, is important in creating a pleasant atmosphere. You donft want anything too busy or bold that will jar the eye. Floral designs are a perfect choice for the bedroom because they promote a sense of beauty and wellbeing. A good example of this are the floral patterns in the spa colorway from the Woodland Retreat collection shown here.

Finally, keep accessories simple and chose things that enhance that get-away-from-it-all feeling for your bedroom retreat. Flowers and softly scented candles, favorite pieces of art and plenty of soft pillows that you can sink into are all good options. And if therefs a desk in your bedroom, hide it from view with a decorative screen. You don't want to be reminded of work or bills just when you're trying to get away from it all

My dining room is decorated in neutrals. It's pleasant enough but I am getting tired of the simple look. I want to do something dramatic but don't want to totally redo the room. Any suggestions?

Painting the space a vibrant color such as bright red or a deep shade of burgundy or midnight blue is one way to effect sudden change, but for something more creative, consider wallpapering one or more of the walls in the room.

There are so many wonderful patterns that your options are almost limitless. Go graphic with a bold plaid or stripe on just one wall. Install a chair rail and use one design above the molding and a complementary pattern below. A simpler alternative would be to select a decorative die cut border adding visual interest near the ceiling, perhaps by encircling the room in wavy ribbons and bows or a colorful floral swag. Trompe l'oeil papers are an easy way to add architectural interest, even a faux window, where none existed.

Wallpapers based on historical documents are another intriguing option. The striking design shown here, for example is the Lightfoot House Mural inspired by a Colonial Williamsburg document. The graceful flowering branches and exotic birds that grace the walls impart a welcome summertime air to the room all through the year.
