How to Make Fabric Covered Chair Seats
You can easily re-cover dining area chairs to give a fresh new look to
your room. Follow these quick tips. To finish the dining room
update, try the companion project, wallpapering
the inside of shelves.
Tips & Creative Alternatives:
- Instead of screws, consider using wing nuts and bolts to reattach
the seat bottom. This type of assembly allows the seat to
be more easily removed providing the option of changing the fabric
style often.
- Before you shop, remove the existing seat to determine the condition
of the wood base and foam. Make a note of the width of these two
components and replace them only if they are heavily damaged.
Using the original base as a pattern, use a scroll saw to cut the new
wood and an electric knife to cut the foam.
Materials Needed:
- 54" wide decorator fabric - Draw your seat pattern following instruction
#2, to determine the amount of fabric needed. For print or
plaid fabrics, add the length of the pattern repeat for each length
purchased.
- medium weight quilt batting
Tools:
- screwdriver or wrench to disassemble seat bottom
- claw hammer or staple remover to pull staples
- heavy duty staple gun and staples
