How to Make a Duvet Cover & Pillow Shams
Originally intended only to protect your heirloom duvet, the decorative
duvet cover now serves as protection as well as the beautiful focal point
in a well appointed bedroom. Only the most basic of sewing skills
are needed to complete a few straight seams and self fabric ties.
This carefree duvet cover and open backed pillow shams eliminates the need
for blankets and bedspreads, ensuring the task of making-up-the-bed to
also be quick and easy.
Tips & Creative Alternatives:
- Because this duvet over is reversible it is perfect for creating
seasonal change. Choose a darker fabric for one side of the
cover and a coordinating lighter fabric for the other. A second
pair of pillow shams in the coordinating color will help to transform
the look from Autumn to Spring.
- To help prevent the duvet from shifting in the cover, consider
stitching short lengths of snap tape or Velcro¨ to the inside
corners. Once the cover is complete, stitch the male halves of
the tape to the corners of the duvet and the female halves to the
corner seam allowances inside the cover.
- Before you shop, measure the width and length of your
mattress. Purchase a duvet large enough for a 12" to
15" drop on each side and at the foot of the mattress.
Materials Needed:
- 54" wide decorator fabric:
For duvets 53" wide or narrower, purchase 2 times the
duvet length plus 4". (For print or plaid fabrics, add the
length of the fabric pattern repeat)
For duvets 54" wide or wider, purchase 4 times the
duvet length plus 8". (For print or plaid fabrics, add 3
times the length of the fabric pattern repeat.)
For fabric ties, (any size duvet) add 3/8 yard of fabric.
