Using a folding screen to divide an open space is an old trick that still works. Our fabric covered screen measures 5 feet tall x 6 feet wide. Because each panel is constructed individually, your screen can be made any size for a custom fit in your home. Completely portable, a folding screen can also serve as a camouflage for an unsightly area, a temporary closet or a privacy shield. It can also become the focal point of the room when using your "signature" Waverly print.

Tips & Creative Alternatives:

  • Choose a second fabric for the back side of the screen for a holiday or seasonal change of pace.
  • For a personalized screen, use a solid fabric and hang framed family photos from a ribbon attached to the top of each panel.
  • For a country look, use a checked fabric with a coordinating plaid ribbon on the edges or for added drama, vary the height of each screen panel keeping the taller panels toward the middle.
  • When you shop, purchase the wood frame first, measure the side depth of the frame, and make a note of it. Before purchasing printed fabric, determine the printed pattern repeat, (How many inches before the same flower, bird or motif repeats in the same place on the fabric.) and make a note of it.

Materials:
Interlocking wood stock artist framing (Also called Canvas Stretchers)
Eight lengths, each 18" long; Eight lengths, each 60" long

54" wide decorator fabric

Solid colors or small prints:  3 1/2 yards for front of screen & 3 1/2 yards for back of screen. This allows for 2 panels to be cut side by side from each 1 3/4 yard length of fabric.

Large prints with repeats: 1 3/4 yard plus the fabric repeat for each panel. For example: (1 3/4 yd. + 1/2 yd. repeat) x 4 panels = 9 yds for front & 9 yds for back

This allows for 1 panel to be cut from each 1 3/4 yard length of fabric. If the repeated design is suitable, 2 panels can be cut side by side from the 1 3/4 yard length of fabric reducing the fabric needed by half.

Framed prints as shown: The cutting width for each fabric panel should equal the width of the wood frame & (depth of frame x 2). The cutting height for each fabric panel should equal the height of the wood frame & (depth of frame x 2)

Compare these cutting dimensions with the print on your fabric. Center the dimensions on the fabric print and determine how many panels can be cut side by side on a 1 3/4 yard length.

18 yards ribbon or trim - width equal to depth of wood frame
