Covered Boxes

Directions

Materials:

  • decorator fabric

  • decorator lining fabric

  • paper backed fusible web

  • felt or imitation suede

  • acrylic paint or copier paper for box camouflage (optional)

Tools:

  • pencil, paper & fabric glue

  • ruler & scissors

  • iron & ironing board

Instructions:

Fusible web, sold by the yard like fabric, is a netting of dry adhesive supported by a paper backing. Using it to apply fabric or wallpaper to the box is a two step process.

First, the net is placed against the wrong side of the textile. Pressing on the paper side, the heat of the iron adheres the web to the textile. Once cooled, the paper is removed.

Next, pressing on the textile side, the web backed textile reacts to the iron¼s heat and is adhered to the box. For specific temperature settings, refer to the web manufacturers instructions. It is approximately 20" wide and can be found in most fabric and craft stores. Use a fabric glue in place of fusible web if the fabric or wallpaper is embossed, vinyl covered or will not withstand heat. Always test a small piece before using.

1. Prepare Box:

If the box you have chosen is multi-colored or shows a manufacturers printed logo, you will need to camouflage the print to prevent it from showing through a light colored textile (fabric or wallpaper). For sturdy corrugated cardboard boxes, use an acrylic paint in a light color to cover the print. Lighter weight, gift-style boxes will not hold up to the wet paint. Camouflage them by covering the large flat areas with white copier-style paper. Lightly glue the paper in place.

2. Measure Box:

Measure and record the length, width and height of the box base and the box lid.

3. Draw Box Base Pattern:

On pattern paper measure and draw 4 squares or rectangles, side by side, following sharp right angles, which equal the length, width and height dimensions of each of the 4 sides of the box base. Begin on the left with a long side, then draw a wide side, another long side and last a wide side, all of equal height. Measure and add a 3/4" side hem to each side edge of the pattern. Measure and add a top facing and a bottom facing to the top and bottom edge of the pattern. Note: The facing dimensions should measure 3/4" for small boxes and 1" to 2" for large boxes.

4. Draw Box Lid Pattern:

On pattern paper, measure and draw a square or rectangle the length and width of the box lid following sharp right angles. Measure and add the height dimension to all edges. Measure and add the facing dimension to all edges. Note: The facing dimension should measure 1/4" less than height.

5. Apply Fusible Web

Cut fabric and fusible web roughly 1" greater on all 4 sides, than base and lid pattern. Following the manufacturer¼s instructions, apply fusible web to the wrong side of each fabric. Do not remove paper backing from web.

6. Cut Fabric

With the right side of the web-backed fabric facing up, pin base and lid pattern to each fabric and cut along all edges. Transfer the pattern markings to the fabric. On box base only, at each of the corner markings, clip a notch within the facing area on both top and bottom facings.

7. Apply Fabric to Box Base

Remove pattern paper and web paper backing from fabric. With box sides matching pattern sides, wrap the fabric, web side in, around the sides of the box, lining up the clipped notches with the box corners. Begin to fuse fabric to the box by pressing one side at a time, positioning and repositioning the box on its side. Press gently, taking care not to crush the sides of the box. Avoid pressing the facing edges at this time. Do not slip box opening over the end of the ironing board as the webbed facing will adhere to the board.

Align the side hems by adhering one to the box and turning under the other hem along marked line. Cut a narrow strip of fusible web, remove the paper backing and fuse it between the fabrics to adhere the hemmed edge.

Positioning and repositioning the box, turn in and fuse the top facing edges to the inside of the box and the bottom facing edges to the bottom of the box. Cut larger clips in the facing if needed.

8. Apply Fabric to Box Lid

Remove pattern paper and web paper backing from fabric. With lid and fabric facing right side up, center fabric over lid and gently fuse lid top. Begin to fuse fabric to the sides of the box lid by pressing one side at a time, positioning and repositioning the lid on its side. Press gently, taking care not to crush the sides of the lid. Fabric triangles will form at each corner. Push and press the triangles to the sides of the lid. Apply glue to hold. Positioning and repositioning the lid, turn in and fuse the facing edges to the inside of the lid.

9. Finishing Box:

Cut a piece of felt to equal the dimensions of the box bottom. Fuse or glue the felt to the bottom of the box.

10. Lining Box:

Measure and cut square and rectangle patterns for each of the base sides, base floor and lid ceiling. Fuse web to lining fabric and cut all pieces. No facings or hems will be necessary as fusible web clean finishes the fabric edge. Trim pieces when necessary to fit flat inside box. Apply to inside box in same fashion as above.
