Instructions:
1. Measure File
Measure and record the length and width of the front and back of the accordion
file.
|
| |
2.
Make Patterns
Cut Cardboard and Batting On pattern paper measure and draw a rectangle,
following sharp right angles, equal to length and width dimensions. If
the accordion file has rounded corners at the upper edges, trace the shape
to the pattern. Using patterns, trace pattern and cut 1 cardboard and
1 optional batting for front and back of file. On pattern, measure and
draw a horizontal line approximately 1/4 the distance from top edge. Cut
pattern into two pieces along that line. On another paper, trace and draw
each pattern, then add 3/4" seam allowance to the perimeter of each
of the two patterns.

| |
3.
Apply Fusible Web
Cut fabric and fusible web roughly 1" greater on all 4 sides, than
border and base pattern. Following the manufacturer¼s instructions, apply
fusible web to the wrong side of each fabric. Do not remove paper backing
from web.
|
| |
4.
Cut and Sew Fabric
Pin base and lid pattern to each fabric and cut along all edges. Remove
paper pattern but not paper backing. With right sides of fabric facing
and cut edges even, pin and stitch by hand or machine, the border fabric
to the base fabric following a 3/4" seam line through the paper backing.
Remove paper backing, trim seam and press seam open using fingers only
- not hot iron.
|
 |
5.
Layer Materials
Place assembled fabric wrong side up on ironing board. Center batting
into position over fabric. Position cardboard over batting. Turn entire
assembly over to right side. Measure and double check the distance from
the top edge of the cardboard to the seam - it needs to be equal and parallel.
Lightly press the center of the fabric, fusing the fabric to batting or
cardboard (if batting has been eliminated). Do not press edges of fabric
as it will adhere to your ironing board.
|
 |
6.
Finish Edges
With wrong side of assembly facing up, wrap and fuse fabric edges to wrong
side. For square corners, first turn up corner and fuse, then turn up
straight edges and fuse. For rounded corners, clip facing every 1/4"
up to cardboard edge. Turn up and fuse each clip individually overlapping
where necessary.
|
| |
7.
Glue to File
Cut ribbon in half and glue one end of each half to the top, inside edge
of front and back cover. Apply glue to wrong side of cover and adhere
to file front and back. Weight the cover with heavy books to hold until
dry.
