How to Make Table Squares & Table
Runners
Transform a plain table into a striking focal point by covering it with
fabulous fabric. A simple-to-stitch table square, placed over a floor
length tablecloth, adds warmth and beauty to any room, so don't limit this
treatment just to the dining table. Choose contrasting patterns for a
dramatic look, or coordinate the textiles and play up the room's
decorative scheme. The design options are limited only by your
imagination. For a change of pace, or if you have a beautiful table you
want to show off, a rectangular table runner adds a gracious finishing
touch.
Tips & Creative Alternatives:
- For the table square, select a second coordinating fabric instead of
a lining and make your table topper completely reversible.
- Place mats are only a smaller version of a Table Runner. To make
matching place mats, cut each 12" X 18", then add the fabric
border in the same fashion as the runner.
- To coordinate the place settings, make fabric napkins to match the
table runner. Cut a 16" square for luncheon napkins and an
18" square for dinner napkins. Stitch a narrow hem on all edges.
Tools:
- sewing machine & iron
- straight pins & scissors
- yardstick & pencil
