We owe its name to the ancient city of Damascus and its origin to Chinese weavers who, centuries ago, devised a rich silk fabric with woven floral designs that came to be known as damask. Over the years this home furnishings staple evolved into a broad group of jacquard-woven reversible fabrics, fashioned from linen, cotton, wool, silk and a host of other fibers, featuring elaborate floral or geometric patterns.
Historically used for upholstery, draperies and table linens in homes with traditional design schemes, damask has recently undergone a transformation and today you’ll just as soon find the fabric featured on the ready-to-wear runway, fashioned into a striking evening dress, as draped over the curving silhouette of an overstuffed sofa or framing an inviting bay window.
And that’s not all. Popular damask motifs are often blown up and printed rather than woven on a variety of textured fabrics in bold colors, making them the perfect focal point in a contemporary room setting. Nor is this popular new look limited to fabric applications. Damask-designed wallpaper has become an easy way to turn a simple room into one that’s nothing less than smashing.
For inspiration on how damask can rejuvenate your home, just take a look at the diverse rooms shown here. The bold black and white bedroom, for example, is a wonderfully contemporary space. At its heart is the Metro bed with its woven jacquard damask comforter and pillow shams giving undeniable proof that damask motifs are the modern way to go. The same damask design also finds its place in the window treatment, but this time it’s printed on sheer pinch pleat drapery panels, a simple but stunning modern statement. |
The damask-designed Metro bed ensemble is from the Waverly Home collection at Target.
Cushions in a traditional damask-inspired pattern printed on a linen-like cloth, Essence from Waverly’s Harmonics collection, have a contemporary look thanks to their updated color scheme of blue and green.

The striking brown and white study is indeed a study on how to update damask design: Simply blow up the damask motif, showcase it in an intriguing shade of chocolate, and feature it on and with contemporary furnishings.
If you prefer a traditional look but don’t want your damask to seem old fashioned, consider a window treatment in a soft but fashionable color combination such as robins egg blue and warm cream, or opt for an elegant damask wallcovering in a subtle shade like sage. |
The soft colors and slubbed fabric of the Damask Duet window shade blends perfectly into this charming, traditional setting. The print design is from the Romantic Overtures collection.
The subtle sage coloring of Damask, an elegant wallcovering from Waverly’s new Master Suites collection, creates the perfect background for this private retreat.

| And if you feel that just a little bit of damask will do you -- at least for a start -- work it into your room setting, whether the look you’re after is modern or traditional, in small accents, like throw pillows or table linens in colors that harmonize or contrast with the space. It won’t be hard to do. These days there’s a damask for every design scheme. |
