Rooms, like people, these days have to be able to multi-task. The living room, for example, with its comfortable couch and upholstered chairs, may be a great place in which to relax and perhaps curl up with a good book, but it is often called into play to serve as a gathering spot when entertaining, and so it needs to look “company ready” as well. An easy way to create a room that is both casual and stylish at the same time is to rely on a sophisticated color scheme built around today’s popular spa shades of soft greens and blues and rich, earthy browns. To the mix of these soothing light and dark hues add the element of texture and you’ll have a space that can handle casual family life and formal cocktail parties with equal aplomb, a space such as the striking living room, a portion of which is shown here. To create a welcome mood in this room, the walls were painted an inviting soft blue-green, a shade which nicely matches the robins egg color of the table round fashioned from Colette, a beautifully textured matelasse from Waverly’s Romantic Overtures collection. The wide fringe trimming the table skirt adds a simple but stately touch. The casual style of the window treatment is a nice counterpoint to the formality of the drapery fabric, Stetson, a chenille with a delicate, dimensional filigree design from Waverly’s Plush Patterns II collection. |
